1. Make Your Bed: Making the bed in the morning can be a very frustrating task for some people. While some individuals can jump out of bed and start getting things done, others take an hour to fully wake up and emerge from the bed. Making your bed as soon as you get up before you do anything else, will give you a sense of accomplishment. This one thing alone can make your room look more welcoming, and pleasing, and bring peace to your subconscious.

2. Get Some Plants: Houseplants are an absolutely amazing addition to a bedroom. Well, really any room in the home. They remove toxins from the air and bring peace and a sense of calm into your life. Plants are aesthetically pleasing and are a wonderful way to brighten up a room. That small hint of green can really make your room pop and bring focus to it. There’s a myriad of different plans that you can use in your home. Some of the most common are spider plants and ivory for indoor hanging plants and succulents for desk or table plants. I personally have hanging ivory and six beautiful succulent plants.

3. Clean Daily: Cleaning daily helps you keep your room clean and fresh, which makes it pleasing to the eye. Cleaning is typically dreaded because we wait until things have been piling up for so long that a simple 15-minute cleaning routine, turns into an all-day affair trying to clean a single room. So, how can we best tackle this? Easy! Clean a little bit every day. Take a few minutes each day to pick up the clothes off the ground and hang up the load of laundry you did. Wipe off the surfaces in your room, (desk, dresser, tables, etc.) every day versus once it gets disgusting. Don’t let the clutter pile up on your dresser, desk, or the end of the bed. Every day find its proper spot and put it away. This simple act will help keep your room open and bright because it will stop your clutter from building up and making your room look like a ball of mess.

4. Upgrade your Lighting: Ditch the dull, yellow-tinted lightbulbs and grab some bright LED lights. If you only have an overhead light (like attached to a ceiling fan) you need to upgrade. Buy a few surface lights or a floor lamp with extending arms at various heights. If you’re a bit of a scent freak like I am, you should also grab a few candles for the late nights when you want to read a good book in bed.

5. Incorporate a Rug: If you don’t have animals in your home, add an accent rug to your bedroom. A rug provides you with a bit of warmth to the floor and some texture. It brings a bit of structure to the room and is great as an accent of color in your bedroom without having to paint any walls.

6. Hang Pictures or Wall Art: A bare wall can look good in some rooms, but it can also be a bit, empty. Coming from someone who used to only have a hat hanging on the wall, I love my new design. I went on Amazon and purchased a few Contemporary Art Seascape Framed Canvas Prints for my bedroom and bathroom. For the bedroom I got beach/boat/ocean themes and for the bathroom more tranquil pieces. I found this to be a great substitute for an expensive framing gallery option. If you’re on a budget like I was, this or a single-framed large painting may be the way to go.

7. Rearrange Your Furniture: Yes, it’s that simple. Rearrange the furniture in your room. You would be amazed by what other furniture layouts can bring more light and openness into your room. I have done this a few times until I found the layout that not only optimized my floor space but also brought the most light inside. Move a few pieces around to see your room in a whole new light. You may even be able to remove or add a new piece.

8. Add a Mirror: A mirror helps your room look bigger and allows for more light to bounce around the room. It’s also a great way to take a look at yourself before you head out the door.

9. Include Throw Pillows: A throw pillow adds comfort and color to a bedroom. You can add a throw pillow to a chair to make it nice and comfy, or on the bed to make the freshly made bed look complete. I have 2 on my bed and one on my reading chair to bring a pop of color to my chair. Those who have a bench in their room can also add pillows to a bench or loveseat.

10. Clean and Accessorize a Surface: Clean off the surfaces in your room like your desk, dresser, and shelving units. Once you remove the clutter and find a spot for everything, accessorize it with caution. Add a few decorative items that will provide a calming effect and add something nice to look at. A few items I use to accessorize on my surfaces are lucky bamboo, succulents, a picture frame, essential oil dispenser, and a quiet noise box.
