7 House Plants for Anxiety

Plants aren’t only for the garden, they’re also for your home. Although they may look beautiful outside of your home, they can also be used inside the house for many health benefits. One of the best health benefits is to help aid in anxiety and depression for those who suffer from one or both mental illnesses. 

Over time, poor air quality can affect your health. It can cause indoor toxins that can cause anxiety, stress, asthma, inflammation, and allergies, just to name a few. Thankfully, there are a few ways that you can improve you and your home’s indoor health. A very cost-effective way to do this is to invest in the right indoor house plants. 

I wouldn’t say throw away any current anti-anxiety medicine you’re currently taking, but you can definitely add some of these plants to your house to help add some extra anxiety and depression relief to your life. 

1. Lavender – Lavender helps to lower stress and anxiety. 

Lavender has to make this list as the #1 most beneficial for anti-anxiety and anti-depression. If you don’t believe me, Google it yourself. Studies have shown that the scent of lavender helps reduce stress levels, anxiety levels, and lower blood pressure, amongst other things. 

Lavender potted plants can be added to your bedroom for health benefits if you or a loved one that lives with you suffers from depression or anxiety. 2. Aloe Vera – Improves air quality in your home.

Aloe vera is one of my top favorite house plants to add to my home because it’s almost impossible to kill it. Although trust me, I have almost killed one or two in my life. I am not a gardener, and my thumb is most definitely not green. These beauties, however, don’t require much attention.

Aloe Vera is commonly used as an herbal remedy that’s been around since the first century AD. It’s known for soothing inflammation, sunburned skin, and scars. It’s also known for being one of the most notorious plant air purifiers in the world. It helps to remove harmful toxins and chemicals from the air, while also lowering carbon dioxide levels at night.

These toxins and harsh chemicals can alter your health by raising depression and stress levels. Aloe Vera will help those be reduced, and possibly eliminated for better overall health and a happier mind.

Bare in mind that you can have these plants in your bedroom, bathroom, home office, virtually anywhere inside your house. They’re very low maintenance as they require little attention and minimum water. Even those of us with the blackest thumbs can keep this beauty alive.

3. Chrysanthemum  – Medical benefits as a plant or a tea. 

Chrysanthemums have a two-part benefit for those of us who suffer from anxiety and depression. The first is its physical appearance. The beautiful flowers add a bright, vibrant color to your home that your eyes and mind will enjoy looking at. The second is its proven ability to purify air to help lessen worry, anxiety, and stress.

Aside from the benefits of air purifying, the plant species has numerous health benefits and is used to treat dizziness, chest pain, fever, headache, cold, swelling, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

4. Jasmine  – Helps improve the quality of sleep. 

Commonly found outside as a shrub, Jasmine can also be grown inside the home. It has a sweet aroma that has been proven to induce a better night’s sleep.

Lack of sleep can cause anxiousness and stress in some individuals who have sleeping issues and are prone to anxiety or depression. You may also find it harder to concentrate in the morning and throughout the day, to make decisions, and you may even have a more difficult time solving problems. Unfortunately, these are some of the mental and physical effects a lack of sleep can have on us and our mental wellbeing.

5. English Ivy – Promotes a better night’s sleep and reduces mold.
